Lady Jackets golf team wins home opener

The Woodford County High School girls' golf team won its season opening match against Western Hills, 199-203 at Moss Hill Golf Course Aug. 9.

The Lady Jackets were led by freshman Mary Peyton Thompson who fired a 43 over nine holes in her first high school match. Senior Rachel Baston was second with a 49 and eighth-grader Sophie Lester shot a 51. WCHS seniors Morgan Murray shot a 56, and Addison Beck fired a 62.

The WCHS boys' team lost a close home match with Shelby County, 178-167. WCHS senior Grayson Johnson led the Jackets with a 38. WCHS sophomore Jack Browining fired a 45 and senior Richard Osborn came in with a 47. WCHS junior Joe Kowalke and freshman Cayce Jones each shot a 48 and sophomore Conner Gilliland had a 51.

Earlier in the week, the WCHS boys' team competed in the Flyer Classic at Juniper Hills Golf Course and finished 16th. Johnson was the low man for Woodford, firing an 80 over 18 holes Browning shot 87, Osborn 88 and Kowalke had a 91. Jones rounded out the Jackets with a 108.
