WCHS volleyball to play for district title
The Woodford County High School volleyball team advanced to the district championship with a 3-0 win over Frankfort Monday, Oct. 9.
The Lady Jackets won the first set 25-16, then cruised in the next two sets, 25-9 and 25-8. Woodford will look to win its second straight district championship when they face Western Hills. Results were not available at press time. The full story will be in next week's Woodford Sun.
The Lady Jackets outlasted East Jessamine in five sets to win its final regular season game on Senior night Thursday, Oct. 4.
Prior to the game, the Lady Jackets honored seniors Adie Preston, Allison Birch, Zoe Harper and Anna Holt.
"Tonight was a bit stressful," said Preston. "We dug deep and got the win, and that's all that matters right now. I am proud of this team for their willingness to fight. Everyone here is so supportive, and this group works hard. Now we can go to districts and hopefully take home the championship."
Woodford won the first set 25-20, but fell behind in the second set and could not recover. The Lady Jackets dropped the second set 25-23, and the match was even.
The Lady Jaguars controlled the third set and won 25-21, but the Lady Jackets were resilient and battled back to win the fourth set convincingly, 25-13.
Woodford carried its momentum into the fifth set and won 15-11.
The Lady Jackets finished the regular season 8-8 in the region and 6-0 in the district.
"It felt like a rollercoaster tonight," said Birch. "We wanted to win for Senior Night, but more importantly we wanted to make sure we carried ourselves into the postseason with a win. We are a close bunch that hangs out together all the time, so we really pull for each other when things go wrong."
