Second Commonwealth of Kentucky Bowl food drive runs through Oct. 26

Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes is urging Kentuckians to participate in the second annual Commonwealth of Kentucky Bowl, a statewide food drive her office is hosting with the Kentucky Association of Food Banks and the Kentucky Association of Counties (KACo) now through Oct. 26.

“More than 700,000 Kentuckians don’t always know where they will get their next meal,” said Grimes. “This week and next, my office is partnering with KACo and the Kentucky Association of Food Banks to help feed Kentucky. Contact your local county officials to see if they are collecting food or donate toward the cause online at HelpFeedKY.com. Every dollar raised equals eight pounds of food.”

The Commonwealth of Kentucky Bowl food drive is a friendly competition among Kentucky counties and their local officials across the state to raise resources for food banks at an important time of need – just before the holidays. The partners’ goal is to raise 160,000 pounds of food or $20,000 by Oct. 26.

The partners kicked off the competition with events at the Capitol and food bank warehouses across the state over the last two weeks.

“As the President of KACo, I wholeheartedly encourage and challenge all Kentucky counties to participate in this year’s friendly statewide competition that supports the Kentucky Association of Food Banks, a wonderful organization doing important work across the entire Commonwealth,” said Jefferson County Circuit Court Clerk and KACo President David Nicholson. “So, let’s all get in the game and do our best to collect food and funds to help our fellow Kentuckians in need.”

“The Commonwealth of Kentucky Bowl will help put food on the table for Kentuckians,” said Tamara Sandberg, executive director of the Kentucky Association of Food Banks. “We are grateful to Secretary Grimes and KACo for leading this effort and honored to partner with them in the fight against hunger in Kentucky.”
