Verleen Lay Thompson, 81, widow of R. Gilbert Thompson, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2018, in Georgetown, with her family by her side.
Born on April 15, 1937, in Casey County, she was the daughter of the late Vernal and Anna Games Lay and spent many years in Midway. She was a member of and attended Central Church of God in Georgetown. She was a former employee at Midway Florist, where she loved working with flowers, and worked for many years with the Union Underwear Company. Verleen enjoyed quilting, crafting and loved Bingo with her special sister-in-law, Jane.
She is survived by her son, Ralph (Teresa) Gilbert Thompson Jr., Frankfort; two daughters, Shelia (Butch) Armstrong and Terry (Ron) Jenkins, both of Midway; four grandchildren, Jenny Thompson, Ashley Thompson, Aletha (T.C.) Reed and Stacey (Chris) Lykins; seven great-grandchildren, Nathan Agee, Matthew Agee, Hailey Reed, Parker Lykins, Owen Lykins, William Nowlin and Charlotte Nowlin. She is also survived by her brother, Chester Lay, Georgetown; her step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Yvonne Sparks and Imogene Yount.
Services were held Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Tucker, Yocum & Wilson Funeral Home with Rev. Sam Glenn officiating. Pallbearers were her grandsons and nephews. Burial followed the service at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The family would like to thank the staff at Windsor Gardens and the staff of Amedisys for all their excellent care they gave their mother.
