Get kids thinking about money; paint a piggy bank

Source: Jennifer Hunter, assistant director of family and consumer sciences We all want our kids to develop financial savviness. Encouraging them to enter the Kentucky Saves Piggy Bank Design Contest is one way to start a conversation with them about smart money management.

Each fall, the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment and UK Cooperative Extension Service, sponsor the contest in anticipation of Kentucky Saves Week. Kentucky Saves Week encourages people to start or increase their personal savings and will be Feb. 25-March 2, 2019.

Any school-age Kentucky student can enter the contest at their county UK Cooperative Extension office. While the contest gives students the opportunity to express creativity, it also allows them to set savings goals for themselves.

Each of the state’s seven extension districts choose two winners based on originality, creativity, artistic design and attractiveness. Winning designs will be displayed in the Capitol Rotunda in Frankfort during February and March. Winners will receive a certificate during a ceremony at the Capitol on Feb. 27. Contest deadlines vary by county. Check with the local extension office for your specific county deadline. Entry forms and more information are available at the Woodford County office of the UK Cooperative Extension Service.
