Mat Jackets have eyes on state championship
The Woodford County High School wrestling team is gearing up for another run at a state title. The Mat Jackets are loaded with talent again this season and are the preseason favorite in state duals, according to kentuckywrestling.com.
While most varsity weight classes will be decided at the Black and Gold duals Nov. 20, the Jackets have depth at nearly every weight. During the Black and Gold duals, teammates who wrestle at the same weight will go head-to-head for a varsity spot in front of family and friends at the WCHS gym. Senior CJ Cardwell finished with a 33-8 record during his junior season. Senior Ronan Wyatt placed seventh last season. Senior Wyatt Andreoni placed fourth and finished his junior season with a 43-9 record, and is the preaeason favorite at 152 pounds. DJ Bernabe returns after a season ending injury early last year. Junior Chase Yost finished his season with a 34-8 record and was state runner-up. Yost was a state champion as an eighth-grader and placed fourth as a freshman. Yost Yost is ranked first in the preseason rankings at 138-pounds. Junior Triston Brooks was a state qualifier last season and finished his sophomore season with a 34-13 record. Over the summer, Brooks won All-American honors at the United States Marines Cadet & Junior National Championships in Fargo, ND. Sophomore Dylan Preston placed sixth and finished his freshman season with a 36-13 record. Sophomore Tony Ornelas was a state qualifier as a freshman and finished his season with a 25-22 record. Senior Juan Chavez was a state qualifier last season and finished with an 11-12 record. Freshman Gavin Andreoni finished his season with a 33-10 record as an eighth-grader and placed fifth at state. Andreoni also placed fifth at the state middle school championships. Freshman Reece Goss was a state middle school champion last season. Goss went undefeated in his eighth-grade season and was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. Freshman Jackson Geilear placed fourth at the state middle school tournament, and freshman Andrew Kartner placed sixth. Freshmen Grant Garrison, Luke Hill and Jeremiah Shulze were also state middle school qualifiers. The remainder of the roster should be adeed at the end of the football season. Ashley Courtney, Tanyea Ramirez and Mequoia Bernabe will be the female competitiors for the Mat Jackets this season. Courtney and Bernabe were part of Team Kentucky this summer and traveled to Fargo, ND to compete in the United States Marines Cadet & Junior National Championships. Bernabe won All-American honors at the event. This season, the Kentucky Wrestling Coaches Association will host the first girls' state wrestling tournament. The event will be Feb. 2, at Tates Creek High School in Lexington.
