Mink


Dr. John R. Mink, 91, passed away on Friday, Oct. 26, 2018.

John was born on Sept. 8, 1927, in Elgin, Illinois, to the late Monte and Marcella (White) Mink. He graduated from Indiana University and Indiana University Dental School, was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity, and served in the United States Army. John was also a founding faculty member and Chairman of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Kentucky where he taught for 50 years. His most cherished accomplishments while he was there were receiving recognition as Teacher of the Year, establishing the mobile dental program, and the John R. Mink Endowed Chair in Pediatric Dentistry and Oral Health Services Research. John served on the Board of Directors of the Margaret Hall Foundation and was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. He enjoyed riding horses and competing in the Kentucky Bluegrass State Games. John is survived by his wife of 66 years, Barbara J. “Jo” Mink; daughters, Sal (Roger Burch) Mink, Tee (Robert) Fiero, Katy (Tom) Casper, Mur (Tom) Greathouse and Bess (Ron) Deering; grandchildren, Liberty (Zen) Herter, Justice (Matt) Konowe, Geoff (Maureen) Burch, Julia Burch Cirks, Christian (Brittany) Fiero, Liz Fiero Hunter, Claira (Alex) Bogt, Tommy (Jessica) Greathouse, Joseph (Kim) Greathouse, Lauren Greathouse, Michael Greathouse, Maddye Mink, Rebecca (Daniel) Charles, Dawn (George) Fink, Airen Champion, John Phillip Deering and Sam Deering; brother-in-law, Bob Merrell, 19 great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents,

John was preceded in death by his son, James E. (Pat) Mink.

Family received friends for a Memorial Calling on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Milward, Broadway, at 159 N. Broadway, Lexington. Memorial services were held on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 210 N. Main St., Versailles, followed by a brief reception in the parish hall.
