Unity in the Community on Nov. 16 at Journey Church

Journey Church will host “Unity in the Community” Friday, Nov. 16, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The event brings people from all walks of life together so they can show their love and their appreciation for each other, according to organizers.

With so many divisions and so much divisiveness in today’s society, event organizer Andrea “Bug” Brown said it’s more important than ever to gather as a community of one.

“We’re all God’s children, and we’ve got to come together and lift each other up and encourage each other,” she said.

In the weeks and months since Brown helped organize the inaugural Unity in the Community two years ago, she said, “We continue to see hurt, pain caused on innocent people just because of their beliefs or the color of their skin. And it just pains me – because I wasn’t raised that way.”

Through her involvement with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Brown said she likes to remind young people that Heaven is not going to be segregated.

“We’re in this together,” she tells them. “Look at heart of a person – not the car that they drive, not the house that they live in, nor the clothes that they wear.”

The upcoming Unity in the Community event will feature a community choir, a message from Dr. Derrick Briscoe and includes a free catered meal for attendees.

Also, teachers, who are cancer survivors, will be recognized and reminded that they are not alone in the struggles they face, said Brown.

“So we really want to pour into them and pray for them,” she explained. Journey Church is located off Lexington Road at 320 Hope Lane in Versailles.
