“I dedicate this house to the Griswold Family Christmas.” – “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation”

So, it was assumed that Clark Griswold plugged his lights into the mains causing the power outage last Thursday, which put the entire town of Midway in the dark around 7:30 p.m. Surrounded by (almost) wrapped Christmas gifts for my nearest and dearest, suddenly plunged into darkness, the outage caused many of us to change plans for the evening. It was found, however, that it was not a resident’s Opryland-esque Christmas lights that shut down the power, but a transformer at the power station on Weisenberger Mill Road. Power was restored by 11 p.m. or so, in time to warm the house though and make some hot tea before bed.

(I finally wrapped my last gifts tonight, now nervously hoping I got everyone what they hoped for and also hoping Amazon is still delivering my last gifts tomorrow (Christmas Eve) – nothing like last minute spontaneous gifts!)

If you get a chance, drive around the Midway neighborhoods during the Christmas season. There are many houses with terrific light displays, many of whom won awards in the recent Midway Women’s Club contest. Main Street looks festive with the lights, decorations and window displays, and most of the local restaurants are offering some seasonal menu items in addition to their regular menu, if you are looking to get a break from cooking this holiday.

Finally, a reminder that the Midway Community Dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve at Midway Christian Church at 123 E. Bruen Street. Everyone is welcome to come to this special community gathering and dinner.
