Jackets place fourth at Woodford County Invitational

The Woodford County Wrestling team placed fourth in the Woodford County Invitational Dec. 28-29. 27 teams competed and an estimated 500 people attended the event.

WCHS junior Chase Yost and sophomore Tony Ornelas won individual championships and Wyatt Andreoni was a runner-up.

Ashley Courtney did not place in the 106 pound weight class. Courtney received a bye in the first round and lost by decision to Leland Reeves (Taylor Co) in the second round. On day two, Courtney

won by decision over Nathan Hale (Christian County) in the third consolation round but lost by major decision to Maximus Beltran (Central Hardin) in the fourth consolation round.

“It’s a long weekend and you have to be ready for anything,” said Courtney. “You need to be in shape, eat healthy and be mentally prepared. You can accomplish a lot if you are prepared.”

Joe Miele did not place in the 113 pound division. Miele won by decision over Chase Bowlin (McCreary Central) in the first round but was pinned by Mason Polston (Central Hardin) in the second round. On day two, Miele won by fall over Isaac Fain (Lafayette) but lost by major decision to Yahir Menchacha (Harrison Co).

Jackson Gordon did not place in the 120 pound weight class. Gordon lost by decision to Jacob Byrd (Winfield) in the first round and received a bye in the first consolation round. Gordon won by fall over Luke Gentry (Coahulla Creek High School) in the second consolation round.Gordon was pinned by Ryan Portwood (North Hardin) in the third consolation round.

Conner Dutton did not place in the 126 pound division. Dutton won by major decision over James Jones (Caldwell County) in the first round but lost by technical fall in the quarterfinals to Scotty Vilums (Male). On day two, Dutton won by fall over Scott Hein (Harrison Co) in the second consolation round but lost by decision to Truman Galusha (Scott County) in the third consolation round.

Chase Yost won the 132 pound weight class. Yost won by fall over Gavin Hansford (Apollo) in the second round and pinned Brandon Sisson in the quarterfinals. On day two, Yost won by fall over Malachi Rider (McCracken Co) in the semifinal. Yost won in overtime over Jakerion Merritt (Christian County) and improved to 17-0 on the season. Yost was injured in the first 30 seconds of the match but he gutted out a terrific performance in front of the packed WCHS gym. Yost was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.

Cam Bohanan did not place in the 132 pound division. Bohanon lost by fall to Gavin Hansford (Apollo) in the first round and lost by decision to Alex Hall (South Oldham) in the second consolation round.

Mackenzie Burdine did not place in the 132 pound division. Burdine lost by fall to Sheridan Willoughby (Bourbon County) in the first round and lost by fall to Brayden Minniard (South Oldham) in the second consolation round.

Dylan Preston won by major decision over Michael Frederick (Jeff City) in the second round and won again by major decision over Kolby Koepp (McCracken Co) in the quarterfinals. On day two, Preston lost a hard-fought semifinal match to Anthony Pierce (South Oldham). Preston won by major decision over Cayden Graham (Scott County) in the consolation semifinals. Preston won a 3-2 decision over Darian Camery (John Hardin) in the third place match.

Kaylen Escaloni did not place in the 138 pound division. Escaloni received a bye in the first round and lost by technical fall to

Anthony Pierce (South Oldham) in the second round. Escaloni lost by fall to Justin Legg (Winfield) in the second consolation round.

Jon Pittman did not place in the 145 pound division. Pittman lost by technical fall to Brent Hudgins (Harrison Co) in the first round but won by fall in the second consolation round over Lupe Santos (Woodford County Gold). Pittman won by major decision over Travis Roby (Apollo) in third consolation round and won by fall over Dylan Norton (Male) in the fourth round. Pittman was eliminated when he lost by decision to Brent Hudgins (Harrison Co) in the fifth consolation round.

Lupe Santos did not place in the 145 pound weight class. Santos lost by fall to David Conner (McCracken Co) in the second round and lost by fall to teammate Jon Pittman (Woodford County Black) in the second consolation round.

Tanyea Ramirez did not place in the 145 pound division. Ramirez received a bye in the first round but lost by major decision to Dylan Norton (Male) in the second round. Ramirez lost by fall to Hannah McDonald (Taylor Co) in the second consolation round.

Wyatt Andreoni was runner-up in the 152 pound weight class. Andreoni won by fall over Walker McCubbin (South Oldham) 6-5 in the second round then won by decision over Will Berendzen (Jeff City) in the quarterfinals. Andreoni won by decision over Sam Rackers (Jeff City) in the semifinals. Andreoni lost a 6-2 decision to Brayden Gianonne (Lafayette) in the championship match.

Andrew Kartner did not place in the 152 pound weight class.Kartner lost by technical fall to Nathan Hedger (Coahulla Creek High School) in the first round and lost by decision to Azariah Saunier (Lafayette) in the second consolation round.

Mick Littrell did not place in the 160 pound division. Littrell won by fall over Gabe Wooden (Taylor Co) in the first round but was pinned in the second round by Tristan Tinsley (Caldwell County). Littrell bounced back and won by fall over Sam Quinnones (Lafayette) in the first consolation round. Littrell won by decision over Jack Hauk (Scott County) in the third consolation round but lost by fall to Wes Oliver (Taylor Co) in the fourth round.

Emmanuel Hernandez did not place in the 160 pound weight class. Hernandez lost by fall to Gabe Zimmerman (Jeff City) in the first round but bounced back with a win by major decision over Dante Dillman (Owensboro) in the second consolation round. Hernandez lost by fall to Hunter Vlach (McCracken Co) in the third consolation round.

Jackson Geilear did not place in the 170 pound division. Geilear won by fall over Alkan Karadeniz (Taylor Co) in the second round but lost by major decision to Tristan Kelley (Coahulla Creek High School) in the quarterfinals. Geilear lost by fall to Dawson Prenger (Jeff City) in the third consolation round.

Will Smithers did not place in the 170 pound weight class. Smithers lost by major decision in the second round to Seth Slaton (Caldwell County) and then received a bye in the second consolation round. Smithers won by injury default over Xavier Martindale (South Oldham)in the third consolation round and lost by decision to Kenyon Drayton (Christian County) in the fourth consolation round.

Dj Bernabe placed fourth in the 182 pound division. Bernabe won by fall over Samuel Jones (McCreary Central) in the first round and won again by fall over Chance Schenck (Central Hardin) in the quarterfinals. On day two, Bernabe lost by major decision to Chase Blanton (Harrison Co) in the semifinals but pinned Spencer Redwine (McCracken County) in the consolation semifinals. Bernabe lost by fall to Mason Hall (South Oldham) in the third place match.

“It’s crazy here, you always have to be ready,” said Bernabe. “We try to stay positive in our downtime and we listen to our coaches as they get us ready to wrestle. I wasn’t very happy with my performance because I only had a couple of days training this week but I am getting stronger and ready for regionals.”

Tony Ornelas placed first in the 195 pound weight class. Ornelas won by decision over Percy Anderson (Christian County) in the second round and won by major decision over Triston Conatser (McCreary Central) in the quarterfinals. Ornelas won by decision over JD McCallister (Winfield) in the semifinals. Ornelas won a 4-2 decision of Logan Deasel (McCracken County) in the championship. After having his hand raised, Ornelas jumped for joy on the mat.

“I felt so much energy and courage in that final match,” said Ornelas. “It was amazing to hear everyone cheering for me and I am so proud that I accomplished something like this today. I felt like I was ready all weekend, I hydrated well, I ate well and had a good mind set.”

Mason Smith did not place in the 195 pound weight class. Smith was pinned by Triston Conatser (McCreary Central) in the second round then lost by fall to Larry Ritchie (Harrison Co) in the second consolation round.

Jeremiah Shulze did not place in the 220 pound division. Shulze lost by fall to Isaac Enloe (Jeff City) in the first round but won by fall over Queston Wheeler (Larue Co) in the second consolation round. On day two, Shulze lost by decision to Kyler Lee (Central Hardin) and was eliminated.

Luke Hill did not place in the 285 pound divison. Hill lost by fall to Markus Green (Christian County) in the first round but pinned William Moore (South Oldham) in the second consolation round. Hill lost by fall to Zac Stray (Lafayette) in the third consolation round.
