Mat Jackets place third at Tates Creek Invitational

The Woodford County High School wrestling team placed third at the Tates Creek Invitational Saturday, Jan. 5. Woodford entered the tournament without eight starters, but the scrappy Mat Jackets fought their way into the top-three. WCHS sophomore Dylan Preston was Woodford's lone champion, and sophomore Tony Ornelas won runner-up in his weight class.

Ashley Courtney did not place in the 106-pound division. Courtney won her first round bout by fall over Wyatt Sparks (Scott County), but then lost by fall to Maurice Murphy (Frederick Douglass) in the second round. In the consolation bracket, she pinned Isaac Ogle (Bullit County) and Adyn Funkhouser (Harrison County) before losing by fall to Gabe Fortier (LaRue County).

Joey Miele did not place in the 113-pound division. Miele won by fall over Isaiah Caudill (Ashland) in the first round but lost by major decision in the second round to Yahir Menchacha (Harrison County). Miele pinned Drew Johnson (Cooper) in the third consolation round, but was eliminated when he was pinned by Gage Hill (Western Hills) in the fourth consolation round.

Jackson Gordon did not place in the 120-pound division. Gordon was pinned by Emmanuel Chennault (Frederick Douglass) in the first round. In the consolation bracket, Gordon pinned Grace Yates (Madison Southern) and Jacob Canada (Whitely County) before losing by decision to Spencer Waller (Tates Creek).

"I think the biggest thing I have learned this season is how to push through a whole match," said Gordon. "You have to be at 100 percent the entire match, and if you let up for a second you can get beat. You have to train hard to be ready to go the full three periods. You have to have a plan in your mind and listen to your coaches. And you should be prepared to compete at your best."

Conner Dutton did not place in the 126-pound weight class. Dutton won by fall over Baylor Booker (Western Hills) in the first round, but lost by technical fall to Seth Lutes (Scott County). In the consolation bracket, Dutton pinned Vinny Stefani (Cooper), but was eliminated by August Althoff (Dixie Heights) on a technical fall.

Cam Bohanan did not place in the 132-pound weight class. Bohanan lost his opening match by major decision to Abrahim Hamdan (Tates Creek). In the consolation bracket, Bohanan pinned Reece Merrill (Sheldon Clark), but was eliminated in a technical fall loss to Anthony Kopp (Dixie Heights).

"I am trying to take advantage of the varsity time right now, and I hope it will help me with my nerves," said Bohanan. "It can be stressful waiting for your matches, and I am learning from the other guys to stay focused and not be worried when my time comes. I feel like I can always learn something with each match."

Dylan Preston won the 138-pound division. Preston pinned his way into the finals with wins over Dmitrius Butler (Covington Holmes) and Tisen Moore (Scott County). In the finals, Preston won a 5-0 decision over John Lowe (Franklin County).

Jon Pittman did not place in the 145-pound weight class. Pittman won by major decision over Logan Park (Scott County), but lost by fall to Jayden Watson (Whitley County) in the second round. In the consolation round, Pittman won a 4-3 decision over Austin Schaffer (LaRue County) but lost by major decision to Gage Hignite (Ashland).

Andrew Kartner placed third in the 152-pound weight class. Kartner won his first round match by major decision over Spenser Adkins (Tates Creek). In the second round, Kartner lost by fall to Tyler Hudgins (Harrison County), but pinned Braden White (Cooper) in the first consolation round. Kartner pinned Kolby Sparks (Sheldon Clark) in the consolation semifinals and pinned Cody Burd (LaRue County) in the third-place match.

Mick Littrell did not place in the 160-pound weight class. Littrell won by technical fall in the first round over Mousa Farraj (Frederick Douglass), but then lost by to Nathan Zinser (Scott County) and Chris Morton (LaRue County).

Jackson Geilear placed fourth in the 170-pound weight class. Geilear pinned Grant Memoli (Ft. Knox) in the opening round, but lost by technical fall to Jared Kelsey (Scott County) in the second round. Geilear pinned Omar Hamdan (Tates Creek), Conner Leslie (Frederick Douglass) and Sonnie Gilkey (Sheldon Clark) before falling to Quinton Hughes in the third-place match.

Will Smithers did not place in the 182-pound weight class. Smithers lost a 7-6 decision to Trevor Garrett (Whitely County) in the opening round. In the consolation round, Smithers pinned Caleb Stone (Madison Southern), Josh Harper (LaRue County) and Nick Lions (Montgomery County) before losing by fall to Ian Daughtery (Cooper).

Tony Ornelas was runner-up in the 195-pound weight class. After a first-round bye, Ornelas pinned Abdul Alaa (Tates Creek) and Rocky Whitehead (Madison Southern). In the finals, Ornelas lost a 2-0 decision to Branson Smith (Sheldon Clark).

Jeremiah Shulze did not place in the 220-pound weight class. Shulze lost a 7-2 decision to Cameron Purvis (Western Hills) in the second round then pinned Zach Goode (Frederick Douglass) in the second consolation round. Shulze pinned Jared Webber (Dixie Heights) before losing to fall to Lane Ezel (Madison Southern).
