Mat Jackets place second in Capital City Championship

The Woodford County High School wrestling team placed second at the Capital City Classic Saturday, Jan. 19. The Mat Jackets Jackets are close to having their complete projected varsity lineup with the exception of former state champion Chase Yost who is currently injured. Woodford went into the Franklin County High School gym fresh off a second place finish in the sectional duals, and travel to Lindsey Wilson College for the state dual championship Jan. 26.

Conner Dutton placed 5th at 120-pounds. Dutton won by fall over Hunter Newbold (Dunbar) in the first round and received a bye in the second round. Dutton lost by decision in the third round to Dylan Harkins (DeSales), but earned a spot in the fifth-place match with a win by fall over Kendal Wright (Pikeville). In the fifth-place match, Dutton won by decision over Emanuel Chenault (Frederick Douglas).

Cam Bohanan placed eighth in the 132-pound weight class. Bohanan was pinned by teammate Jon Pittman in the first round but won in the second round by fall over Jaden Wideman (Franklin County). In the third round, Bohanan pinned Alex Beam (Harrison County). Bohanan lost by decision to Isaiah Fultcher (Jeffersonville) in the consolation round.

Jon Pittman placed third at 132-pounds. Pittman pinned Bohanan in the first round then pinned Alex Beam (Harrison County) in the second round. Pittman won by technical fall in the third round over

Jaden Wideman (Franklin County). Pittman lost by fall to Sheridan Willoughby (Bourbon County) in the championship bracket but won by major decision over Dylan Johnson (Jeffersonville) in the third-place match.

Jarom Bradshaw placed 14th in the 132-pound weight class. Bradshaw lost by fall to Peter Mark (Central Hardin), then was pinned by Allan Friend (Dunbar) and lost by fall to Joseph Evans (Fort Knox). Bradshaw won his first match of the season by decision over Eduardo Childers (Pikeville).

Dylan Preston placed first in the 138-pound weight class. Preston won by fall over Kolton Gettings (Jeffersonville) and then pinned

Jackson Gonzalez (Frederick Douglas) in the second round. Preston won by fall over Conley Combs (DuPont Manual) in the third round and won by decision over Eric Green (Pikeville) in the championship round. Preston won by fall over Cayden Graham (Scott County) in the finals.

Kaylen Escaloni placed 12th in the 138-pound weight class. Escaloni was pinned by Christian Wooten (Fort Knox) and then lost by fall to John Lowe (Franklin County). Escaloni then won by forfeit over

Cameron Allen (Jeffersonville) in the third round.

"I've been around wrestling for a long time but being out here and competing is much different," said Escaloni. "I've done pretty well against girls but when wrestling guys, it's much harder. Boys are stronger, and I cannot overpower them so I try and keep my technique sharp so I can stay in the match."

Joe Rivera placed 16th in the 145-pound weight class. Rivera received a bye in the first round and lost by fall to both Zach Sheets (DeSales) and Enrique Rico (Central Hardin).

Ronan Wyatt placed 4th in the 145-pound weight class. Wyatt was 2-0 on the day but had to forfeit his final two matches due to injury. Wyatt won by fall over Braxton Briscoe (Anderson County) and won in the third round by major decision over Jeffery Parker (Western Hills).

Wyatt Andreoni placed first in the 152-pound weight class. Andreoni won by fall over Kyle Mardis (Newport) in the first round then pinned Denisse Ortiz (Bourbon County) in the second round. Andreoni pinned Martani Kazadi (Dunbar) in the quarterfinals and won by major decision over Tyler Hudgins (Harrison County) in the semifinal. Andreoni won by decision over Cole Nance (Anderson County) in the championship bout.

Andrew Kartner placed fourth in the 152-pound weight class. Kartner won by technical fall over Blair Nichols (Perry County) and won by decision over Nathan Eihusen (Jeffersonville) in the quarterfinals. Kartner lost by fall in the semifinals to Cole Nance (Anderson County) and lost by fall to Tyler Hudgins (Harrison County) in the third-place match.

Emmanuel Hernandez placed 16th in the 160-pound weight class. Hernandez was pinned in all three of his matches.

Triston Brooks placed second in the 160-pound weight class. Brooks won by fall over Conner Yazell (Bourbon County) then won by fall over Jack Hauke (Scott County). In the third round, Brooks pinned Austin Smith (Jeffersonville) and pinned Parker Reeves (Dunbar) in the semifinals. Brooks lost by decision to Will Baber (Bourbon County) in the finals.

Jackson Geilear placed second in the 170-pound weight class. Geilear won by fall over Alan Shultz (Western Hills) in the first round and pinned Eli Cartrette (Jeffersonville) in the second round.

Geilear won by fall over Connor Ridenour (DuPont Manual) in the third round and pinned Connor Leslie (Frederick Douglas) to reach the finals. Geilear lost a 7-0 decision to Trenton Cantlon (DeSales) in the championship match.

DJ Bernabe placed eighth in the 182-pound weight class. Bernabe pinned Chance Schenck (Central Hardin) but lost by decision to Cameron Bixler (Anderson County) in the second round. Bernabe lost by injury default in the consolation round to Samuel Russell (Newport).

Tony Ornelas won the 195-pound weight class. Ornelas pinned James Coyler (Western Hills) in the first round and then pinned

James Arnold (Scott County) in the second round. In the third round, Ornelas pinned Jacob Fields (Western Hills) to reach the championship bracket. Ornelas won by decision over Chandler Miller (DeSales) in the semifinals then won by major decision over Larry Ritchie (Harrison County) in the championship match.

Mason Smith placed 12th in the 195-pound weight class. Smith lost in sudden victory to Kwahlie Coffman (Frederick Douglas) and then lost by fall to Larry Ritchie (Harrison County) in the second round. Smith won by fall in the third round over Dee Stone (Anderson County).

Jeremiah Shulze was runner-up in the 220-pound weight class. Shulze won by fall over Jordan Hernandez (Jeffersonville) and pinned Jordan Ross (Franklin County) in the second round. In the third round, Shulze pinned John Hulette (Scott County). Shulze reached the finals with a win by decision over Cameron Purvis (Western Hills). Shulze was pinned in the championship match by Colby Stratman (DeSales).
