Mat Tigers qualify two for state tournament, finish eighth

The Woodford County Middle School wrestling team finished eighth at the Region 4 Championship in Paintsville. Gabe Burden, Landon Wettlaufer and Braylen Livingston (Woodford Wrestling Club) qualified for the state championship at Broadbent Arena in Louisville Feb. 2.

Caleb Rogers did not place in the 70-pound division and was 0-2 in the tournament.

Livingston was runner-up in the 70-pound division. Livingston won by major decision over Blake Osborne (Martin County Cardinals), then won by decision over Zac Scott (Johnson County) in the quarterfinals. Livingston reached the finals with an 8-2 decision over Deacon Cano (Scott County ). Livingston lost by major decision in the championship to Anothy Condi (Carr Academy).

Wettlaufer placed fourth in the 75-pound division. Wettlaufer pinned Brooklyn Banfield (McNabb ) in the quarterfinals, but lost by major decision to Issac Johns (Carr Academy) in the semifinals. In the consolation round, Wettlaufer won by decision over Ryan Smith (Johnson County). In the third-place match, Wettlaufer lost by major decision to Carson Herbest (Carr Academy).

Aiden Slugantz did not place in the 80-pound division and was 1-2 in the tournament.

Gavin Asch did not place in the 86-pound division and was 1-2 in the tournament.

Burden placed fourth in the 92-pound weight class. Burden pinned Jayden Channer (Edythe J. Hayes Wrestling Club) in the quarterfinals, but lost by major decision to Dakota Ferguson (Johnson County) in the semifinals. Burden pinned Gabe Kestner (Johnson County) in the consolation round, but lost by decision to Hayden Canady (Perry County Wrestling Club) in the third-place match.

Cooper Ford did not place in the 98-pound weight class and was 0-2 in the tournament.

Delano Mullins did not place in the 113-pound weight class and was 2-2 in the tournament.

Anthony Tilley did not place in the 113-pound weight class and went 1-2 in the tournament.

Cody Simpson did not place in the 130-pound weight class and went 1-2 in the tournament.

Noel Devers did not place in the 130-pound weight class and was 0-2 in the tournament.

Harley Graham did not place in the 140-pound weight class and was 2-2 in the tournament with two pins.

Chaz Stout, Jr. did not place in the 140 pound weight class and went 0-2 in the tournament.

Noah Floyd placed fifth in the 168-pound weight class. After a loss in the quarterfinals to Jayden Haynes (McNabb ), Floyd won by fall over Brendan Theurer (Scott County ). Floyd pinned Kaleb Boles (Edythe J. Hayes Wrestling Club) in the consolation round, but lost by fall in the consolation semifinals to Tyler James (Boyd County Take Down Club). In the fifth-place match, Floyd won by major decision over teammate Jonathan Garcia.

Jonathan Garcia placed sixth in the 168-pound weight class. Garcia pinned Brendan Theurer (Scott County ) in the first round, but lost by technical fall in the quarterfinal to Chase Price (Johnson County). Garcia won by decision over Cole Christian (Boyd County Take Down Club) and then pinned Juan Rodriguez (Berea) in the consolation rounds. Garcia lost by fall to Andrew Gaunce (Harrison County Wrestling Club) then lost by major decision to teammate Noah Floyd in the fifth-place match.

Koral Tipton did not place in the 168-pound weight class after going 0-2 in the tournament.

Aaron Turner placed fifth in the 240-pound weight class. Turner won by fall over Dylan Pierce (Ashland), but was pinned by Logan Lemaster (Johnson County) in the semifinals. In the consolation semifinal, Turner was pinned by Nate Manning (Boyd County Take Down Club) but won the fifth-place match by fall over Nicholas Snider (Madison County).
