Changes and new beginnings

The Woodford Wag turns 10 this year, and with that big decade anniversary come some big changes – so if you’ve been a Wagger over the years, prick up those ears!

The Wag, which has previously included both a dog walk and a 5K race, is now simply a scenic, countryside dog walk for a great cause. We like to think it’s mellowing with age: sleeping in a little, getting more casual, not so worried about pace as it is about stopping to sniff the roses (or the grassy trails, as the case may be). If you’ve walked the Wag with your dog in the past, you can expect the same dog-loving, dog-celebrating feel, but a more scenic route and a later start-time. The after-walk party will include games and treats for dogs and people alike, as well as a $1 pick-a-prize raffle with some awesome goodies on the line.

Now, if you’ve been a loyal runner of the 5K, don’t let this news get you down! The reason the 5K is no longer part of the Wag is that we’re launching a brand-new race on Aug. 24: the Triple Crown Trot, hosted by Coolmore America’s Ashford Stud. Runners will enjoy a private 5K (or 25 furlong, if you prefer) course that takes them all around Ashford Stud, from the foaling barn to the stallion complex and beyond. We’ll have one-of-a-kind medals and awards for all age groups and overall winners. But the real treat is the setting; how often do you get to run with world-class thoroughbreds cheering you on from the sidelines? With Justify and American Pharoah in residence, the title of “fastest thing on four legs” is definitely taken… but “fastest thing on two legs” could be yours! The best thing about the Trot is that it gives us the opportunity to give our runners a lot of the things they’ve asked for over the years: a road race, in a beautiful location, with chip timing, that can handle bigger crowds. And the best part? If you’ve always had to choose between walking your dog at the Wag or running the 5K, now you can do both! Registration is open now for both the Woodford Wag and the Triple Crown Trot, and pricing is tiered so it pays to register early. We’re looking forward to two great events, with lots of happy dogs and runners this spring and fall. Learn more and get signed up at woodfordhumane.org or give us a call at 859-873-5491 with any questions.
