Three WCHS tennis players headed to state

The Woodford County High School Racket Jackets competed in the regionals on Wednesday, May 15. Overall, it was a solid showing for both the boys’ and girls’ teams.

Both of the WCHS girls’ singles players, Addison Beck and Claire Pinkston, made it to the quarterfinals. Likewise, the two double pairings also advanced to the quarterfinals. The duo of Nicole Feldner and Sophie Wingo fell to competition from South Oldham, while Caroline Miller and Chiara Heidenriech were defeated by a team from Simon-Kenton. While none of the four potential qualifiers were able to make it through to the semi-finals and earn a spot in the state championship tournament, the team’s eight wins did earn them the title of Region 8 Runner-ups.

On the boys’ side, Gus Smith (singles) and Mason McIntyre/Evan Bentley (doubles) will be heading to the KHSAA State Tournament. Both Smith and the doubles pairing made it to the region semi-finals before being knocked off. As the No. 6 seed, Smith managed an upset over the No. 3 seeded player in his bracket before falling in the semi-finals to earn his place at state.

The seeding and brackets will be released Friday, May 24, with play beginning on May 30 at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center at the University of Kentucky.
