Volley Jackets win 30th District Tournament without losing a set

The Woodford County High School volleyball team’s domination of the 30th District concluded in the only way that would have made sense - with a 3-0 victory over Spencer County last Wednesday to claim the district championship in Taylorsville. The win moved the Lady Yellow Jackets’ record to 29-8 on the season. WCHS won 25-20, 25-22 and 25-19 to defeat the Lady Bears in their home gym and advance to the 8th Region Tournament as a top-four seed. It was Woodford Coach Meghan Bottom’s third consecutive district championship dating back to 2017’s conquest of the 41st District. Now that Woodford County has moved to the 30th District, the Volley Jackets join the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams as 30th District champions of their respective sports. Junior Piper McCoun was dominant in the District Championship match, recording a team-high 18 kills while also leading the team with six digs as part of an effort that garnered tournament MVP honors. The Lady Jackets’ other captain, senior Evelyn Milburn, also earned an All-Tournament team nod with a team-leading 32 assists and two of the team’s four blocks in the match. Woodford County built a sizable eight point lead in the opening set against Spencer County before allowing the Lady Bears to close the gap to three. The Jackets finished the set strong, winning three of the set’s final four points to win 25-20. The second set was close throughout and tied at 22-22 in the late stages before Woodford pulled away with three straight points to once again win the set and set up the clinching third set. Woodford won 30 of its 34 sets played against district competition this season as they led in the district standings from Aug. 22 onwards. In addition to McCoun and Milburn’s awards, Legend Burgess, Devan Champion and Caroline Miller also made the All-Tournament team. Tuesday evening the Lady Yellow Jackets faced South Oldham in the opening round of the 8th Region tournament and earned a 3-0 victory over the Lady Dragons to set up a Wednesday night match with Henry County.
