Ask An Officer

Question: What can be done about vehicles with extremely loud exhausts that belch out huge plumes of dark smoke? Answer: Drivers of vehicles that are excessively loud and emit large volumes of exhaust may be issued citations. The law requires vehicles to have “suitable and efficient mufflers” and those vehicles are prohibited from being driven on highways with the muffler cut off or removed. Further, exhaust systems may not be modified in a manner that would amplify or increase the noise emitted. Regarding “huge plumes of dark smoke,” vehicles must be equipped to minimize noise, smoke and other nuisances so as to protect the rights of other vehicles.
