Letter to the Editor

Justice in McDaniel case Editor, The Sun: Like everyone in our little town, I was floored to hear about the terrible attack on Katy McDaniel. But, after reading the Sun’s Oct. 24 coverage of Doug McDaniel’s preliminary hearing, I became concerned in a different way. Before waiving the right to the hearing, the accused’s attorney, in a blatant effort to change the narrative in this case, asked for the phone records of the victim. It is now apparent that the only defense they can find is to put the victim on trial. To somehow in 2019 try to defend the alleged 26 times stabbing as a reasonable reaction of some kind by the accused. For whatever reason should not matter. This is unfortunate but yet legal, as the defendant is and should be allowed every right to a robust and complete defense. Yes, this defense strategy will re-victimize. It shouldn’t happen, but it will. What is obvious now is that the defense lawyers have shown their hand and that the community and the prosecution must be diligent. The community has already shown so much love and support. They must not allow the defense to water down the jury pool and they must put the best domestic assault experts on the stand, and they cannot let the narrative turn the accused into the victim. That happens too often. For our little community to find justice, we all must work hard and vocally to make sure that, in this case, justice does not flip upside down. Jason Teegarden Midway
