10 Years Ago November 18, 2010 A recanvass of the Nov. 2 general election votes conducted Nov. 12, in all 16 counties in Central Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District showed Democratic U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler leading Republican Andy Barr by 648 votes. Vote totals for Versailles mayoral candidates did not change after a Nov. 12 recanvass of totals from Election Day, solidifying Mayor Fred Siegelman’s reelection. A financial audit report presented to the Woodford County Board of Education on Monday night found no significant deficiencies or instances of noncompliance in the school district’s financial statements for last fiscal year. Problems at the site of the city water intake pipe at the Kentucky River bank, eroded by the heavy rains of last May, which means the Versailles city government is facing repair costs greater than it originally anticipated, were discussed at Tuesday’s Versailles Council meeting. The Woodford County Lacrosse Association will begin its first season in February with Woodford in Division III. 25 Years Ago November 16, 1995 Tavner Dunlap Jr., 77, prominent landowner and farmer in Woodford County, died Friday, Nov.10. He was a descendant of a family whose roots in the Pisgah area date to the 1780s. John William “Jack” Carroll, 72, an active and well-known Woodford County farmer, also died Nov. 10. Carlos Blevins, who has directed the Woodford Count Ambulance Service for the past 25 years, has announced that he will retire next February. Midway College has received a $1 million gift from James C. Bowling retired senior vice president and assistant to the chairman of the board of Philip Morris, Inc. The Midway College soccer team won its second straight MidSouth Region championship last Sunday with a 2-1 overtime victory over Lees McRae (N.C.). Lincoln County scored a come-from-behind 21-14 football regional semifinal victory over the WCHS Yellow Jackets Friday night. The Jackets’ season ended at 7-5. 40 Years Ago November 13, 1980 Recent dry weather has led to a rash of brush and grass fires across the state. During the past week in Woodford County alone, 12 fires related to the dry conditions were fought by city and county firemen. Wilbur Louis Schu, a former Versailles High School and University of Kentucky basketball star, died last Thursday in Lexington after a heart attack. He was 57 and was a resident of Georgetown. The Woodford County Yellow Jackets, after reeling off 11 straight football victories, will play Meade County for the Region 2 Class AAA championship tomorrow night. Ground was broken Monday for a new county animal shelter on land donated by GTESylvania on Lawrenceburg Road. Restoration of a log cabin built in about 1805 in Jessamine County, obtained last year by Kitty and Henry Graddy and moved to their Greenwood Farm on Steele Pike, is nearing completion. Work is progressing rapidly on the new elementary school on Huntertown Road. Construction of a new addition at Woodford County High School has begun. The City of Midway will accept a federal grant of $1,849,996 and will apply for a Farmers Home Administration loan of $616,598 to be used for sewer plant improvements.
