A 58-year-old Woodford County man accused of killing his brother has been scheduled to reappear in Woodford Circuit Court for a four-day jury trial beginning Oct. 24 to 28. Vernon Saunders will face charges of murder, tampering with physical evidence and abuse of a corpse (misdemeanor) at trial. He had been scheduled to face the charges beginning on April 18, but that jury trial was cancelled. Public defender Scott Getsinger told Circuit Judge Paul Isaacs on April 6 that Saunders was concerned and upset that his trial was delayed, before asking for a bond reduction. The motion was denied and Saunders's bond remains at $500,000. "Due to the nature of the offense," said Isaacs, "I'm not going to change the bond at this time." According to a Woodford County grand jury indictment, Vernon Saunders intentionally caused the death of Timothy Saunders on May 3 or 4, 2014, by shooting him multiple times with a handgun. Versailles Police reported that Vernon Saunders admitted that he had shot "an intruder" three times. He then used a strap to tie the body to his truck and dragged it "down the road" after he was unable to lift the body into his truck. Authorities found the body of 51-year-old Timothy Saunders north of the Troy Pike-Mundys Landing Road intersection. He was staying at his older brother's Troy Pike home while visiting from Florida to work at the Keeneland spring meet and the Kentucky Derby, police said. Saunders and his attorney are scheduled reappear for a pretrial conference in Woodford Circuit Court on Sept. 7.
