Tips for shopping at farmers markets The farmers market is a great place to find fresh fruits and vegetables, but shopping at farmers markets can be overwhelming if you’ve never been before. Here are five tips to help navigate the market in your community. 1. Go early. If you can get to the market right when it opens, you will have the best selection of produce and the best variety. 2. Browse before you buy. Walk through the entire market to see what each farmer has to offer, which produce looks best and who has the best prices. 3. Ask questions. If you don’t know what something is, that’s okay! Ask the farmer at the booth. He or she can share more about the produce along with tips on how best to store and cook items. If you ask, they might even let you sample something before buying it. 4. Bring your own bags. This helps keep expenses down for the farmers and is better for the environment. 5. Bring cash. Cash, particularly small bills, is the easiest form of payment for most markets. It also helps you stick to a budget, making it harder to overbuy produce you might not be able to consume before it goes bad.
