January 8, 1903… The YMCA rooms are on the second floor of the Davis Block over Hopkins & Mitchell Grocery. The suite contains five rooms, which will soon be decorated. A nuisance which we think should be abated for the benefit of the travelers and strangers who came here is the onslaught made by a gang of urchins on every stranger alighting from the trains with grip of packages. Before he is fairly on the ground, he is beset by a crowd of jabbering gamines who grab his baggage and make life miserable for him until he can get down and drive them away. The urchins hope to make a nickel or so by carrying baggage, and so pounce on everyone they see get off with a grip or parcel. This is a source of great annoyance, particularly to women. It ought to be stopped. We never saw it permitted anywhere else than in Midway. Charles Chenault was captured at this place Saturday night by Marshals Stephens and Hammond. He was taken from a freight train at about midnight. He was a trusty at the Frankfort pen and had used his privileges to get away. One of the new fads is men’s socks for women. There is a rumor prevalent that some wives already wear the trousers, but no one imagined that the socks would also be appropriated. If the women continue the invasion of the wardrobes of men, there will be mighty few articles of wearing apparel that man can call his own. His hat, shirt, vest, collar, tie and socks are gone. He has remaining his chewing tobacco and suspenders, not much of a lay-out for a cold day. James B. Haggin, the western turfman, has bought from the estate of Heber R. Bishop one share of stock in the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, which carries with it box No. 34, one of the best in the horseshoe tier and flanking on the right of the box of J. Pierpont Morgan. This sale is one of the first made in many years and the price for the box, though not made public, is said to be about $90,000. January weather has been all that the meanest words in the language could describe it. All we can do is keep on hoping that the sun is going to shine by and by. Origin of baseball… The Devil was the first coach. He coached Eve to take first. Adam stole second. When Isaac met Rebecca at the well, she was walking with a pitcher. Samuel struck out many times when he slew the Philistines. Cain made a base hit when he killed Abe. Abraham made a sacrifice. The prodigal son made a home run. Moses shut out the Egyptians at the Red Sea. The game was called when the flood came on account of wet grounds and Noah had all the rain checks.
