Summer is here and the heat and humidity are rising — a perfect time to talk about cold temperatures and keeping our fellow citizens warm!
The Outreach Committee at St. John’s Episcopal Church will launch “Wrapped in Love” on July 29, a community-wide project that plans to provide 100 hand-knit or hand-made winter hats and scarves to Woodford County residents. The event will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the church, located at 210 N. Main Street, Versailles.
Many of our fellow Woodford Countians are exposed to the harsh temperatures of winter and may have difficulty obtaining warm clothing items. All knitters, crocheters and seamstresses are invited to participate in this endeavor by making hats and scarves for children, women and men.
The Outreach Committee will distribute the items throughout Woodford County at places such as the Blessing Boxes, the Woodford County and Midway libraries, Spark Cafe, Big Spring Park pavilion, the Woodford County Health Department and other accessible locations.
Knitting and crocheting sessions will be held on the third Saturday of the month in August, September and October. The first session is Aug. 17 at St. John’s, the Sept. 21 session will be at the Woodford County Library and the last session will be on Oct. 19 at St. John’s.
Free yarn is available at St. John’s through the generous donation of the Lex Center for Creative Reuse in Lexington.
Completed items should be packed in a zip-lock bag with a note of encouragement. Items can be dropped off at St. John’s on Wednesdays through Nov. 15 between 10 a.m. and noon. They can also be dropped off at the Woodford County Library or Bluegrass Stitches & Crafts during regular business hours through Nov. 15.
This project will let others know Woodford County is a community filled with folks who care about one another and want to provide a warm gift. The creators of the items will receive the gift of love and gratitude.
