Dear Woodford Countians,
I would like to begin this letter with a HUGE thank you to all those who have given and are giving of their time and knowledge, with no compensation, to the children of Woodford County. In whatever area of sports, education, tutoring, counseling, other activity, it is appreciated.
We have a program here in our school system, outside of the usual sports, that is catching on in numbers and that is archery. Our middle school and high school both have teams that are very competitive and have won many tournaments with the bow and arrow. Archery was even in the elementary schools as a club until COVID. Now that COVID is no longer the threat as it once was, Southside Elementary has picked up their bows again and are out there with the big kids.
The Stallions were given the go-ahead in late season to try for a team comprised of fourth and fifth graders. In this short time, they have accomplished basic skills and have won first place in a couple of their tournaments. This is the first time in school history they have qualified to compete at the state level at Louisville in March, this year. To quote their coach Bobby Aldridge, “The Southside archers are the only team in the top 20 that started their archery program this season with all beginner archers.” Five of these archers have qualified for State participation as individuals by placing in the top 150 elementary female archers. One of which is ranked 21st.
National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) promotes student education, physical education, and participation in the life-long sport of Archery. This in-school program is aimed at improving education performance among students in grades 4-12. Students learn focus, self-control, discipline, patience, and the life lessons required to be successful in the classroom and in life.
Thanks to all of you who are or have been a part of this program. I’m loving it!
