Slow down on Morgan St.
We moved back to Versailles in February 2019 after being gone for 32 years. We purchased our home on Morgan Street. I am proud to say that over this time, the street has become home to over 16 children, including our granddaughter.
While understanding that Morgan Street has always been a “cut through” —even when we lived here 30 years ago, people used it to avoid the lights at Locust and Main streets when coming down Lexington Street— it has become more and more dangerous to the residents here.
While there is one – ONE! – 25 mph speed limit sign, most people do not obey it. I would say, in fact, that many people travel in excess of 40 mph between Locust and Church streets.
I know the city recently placed a speed monitoring trailer here for a week, but I would say that people did not even obey this, and it did no good. There is excessive speed on this street! Rush hours (morning and evening) are nightmares.
The four-way stops installed a few years ago, and the “Rolling Stop Fine” signs that have been installed do not do much good either. People continuously roll through the stop signs, and some do not even stop if they don›t see other cars nearby on any of the streets. They also do not allow pedestrians to cross at the corners safely.
Most of us have driveways, and when attempting to back out, even if cars are very far away, they speed and go around or fly up while you are backing out, and blare horns like we are an obstruction. I literally have to stand out next to the street when my daughter-in-law comes to pick up my granddaughter to ensure they can back out safely without these unsafe practices occurring, and I have been yelled at several times.
This doesn›t even include the terribly loud trucks that barrel through here at 5 a.m. or 5:30 a.m. each morning.
While I understand we are «downtown,» we are still a residential neighborhood and one with many children who deserve a safe place to live and play. Something needs to be done before someone is injured or, at the least, property damage in the form of an accident occurs.
This neighborhood deserves respect and safety. Drivers are in too much of a hurry and are rude!
