Previous BOE irresponsible
Â
As many are aware, the Woodford County Board of Education intends to impose a 63.3 cent school tax (per every $100 of property value) on the taxpayers of this county.
While I do not agree with the amount of tax, the current Board of Education deserves credit for attempting to address the situation they did not create. The BOE is the responsible party for the district’s finances. The previous BOE was irresponsible by spending taxpayer money they did not have. This created the current problem and financial deficit the current board is now facing. However, it should not be the responsibility of the taxpayer to pay for the irresponsibility of a group of elected officials.
Now that the allowable tax rate, without recall, has been released by the Kentucky Department of Education, it is known how much of the 63.3 cent tax is recallable. That number is eight-tenths of a cent (.8 of a cent). This is down from the preliminary proposal that put the recallable amount of the tax at 2.8 cents.
A recall petition is very time consuming and an arduous task. The taxpayers of this county have to decide whether eight-tenths of a cent constitutes a recall effort.
