KENTUCKY STATE UNIVERSITY rededicated the newly renovated Chandler Hall, a residential student housing hall for women, on its campus as part of its 2026 Homecoming festivities. Built and originally dedicated in 1939, the hall was named for former Kentucky First Lady Mildred Chandler, wife of then-Kentucky Gov. A. B. “Happy” Chandler. Mrs. Chandler was instrumental in helping to secure the funding from the Kentucky Legislature for its construction. The portrait of Mrs. Chandler is still hanging in the hall. In announcing the completion of the $10 million project, Dr. Kofi Akakpo, KSU’s president, said, “(Chandler Hall) has been home to generations of Kentucky State women. Within its walls, students have studied, formed lifelong friendships, supported one another and taken some of their first steps toward independence. For many alumnae, Chandler Hall represents far more than a residence hall. It remains part of what made Kentucky State feel like home.” From left, Jack McNear, Board of Regents member Edward Fields, Jailynn Peasant, Collin Williams, Precious Akrinwiye, Trinity Alexander, Jacari Parmer, Ben Chandler and Erin Chandler (Mrs. Chandler’s grandchildren), President Akakpo and Board of Regents Chair Tammi Dukes.
