DONATIONS FROM COMMUNITY PARTNERS helped the Woodford County Fire Department purchase a large animal rescue trailer and the specialized equipment used to rescue horses and cows. With financial contributions from community partners, the Woodford County Fire Department (WCFD) has purchased a large animal rescue trailer and specialized equipment used for cow and horse rescues.

“This year alone,” WCFD Chief Melvin Montgomery told the Sun, “we’ve had nine large animal rescues, which have all been horses.” That is a much higher number than previous years, he said.

So after a harsh winter when two horses were rescued from frozen-over fields caused by water runoff, and more people becoming aware that the WCFD does large animal rescues, he said there was an increasing need for his department to have a fully-equipped large animal rescue trailer.

Montgomery said donations from Woodford County Farm Bureau, Collins Construction, McCauley Brothers, Animal House Pet Hotel and The Barn at Duckworth Farm totaling $2,800 made it possible for the WCFD to purchase a large animal rescue trailer and the equipment needed for those types of rescues without delay.

A fully-equipped trailer allows firefighters to respond to a large animal rescue as soon as a call comes in because “now all we’ve got to do is hook up (the trailer) and go,” he said.
The large animal rescue trailer, which has been in service for about three months, cost about $5,900, and the equipment cost an additional $3,900, Montgomery said. The purchases were approved by the Woodford County Fire District Board, he said.
