What else can lovers of Kentucky's signature spirits do but weep on the news that about 6,000 gallons of premium bourbon whiskey has gone to waste? That's what happened on Aug. 3 at the Woodford Reserve Distillery, according to Woodford County Fire Chief John Varner. The county fire department was called to the distillery that day after a truck hauling a tanker containing 6,000 gallons of Woodford Reserve overturned and spilled some of its contents. And while Varner said most of the whiskey stayed in the tank and what did escape was cleaned up, he was told by distillery officials that the high-end bourbon could no longer be sold as drinking whiskey. The officials said it would probably be sold to an ethanol producer and used for another, less-festive purpose. Varner said the whiskey was being shipped to a facility that fills small bottles for airlines and the like.
