February 10, 1921… Andrew Wallace died Friday night at Woodford Hospital after a lingering illness. He was 70. He was a merchant in Versailles for many years and was a member of the Presbyterian Church. He leaves three brothers, Ed M., Eugene and Robert M. Wallace; and two sisters, Mrs. Annie M. Swope and Mrs. W.H. Whitsett. Jessie Harper Hawkins, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clint Hawkins, died Friday of whooping cough. The child is also survived by a brother and a sister. A meeting is set for Thursday evening at the public school auditorium for the purpose of organizing a parent-teacher organization. Dr. M.D. Austin delivered an address giving a resume of the history of the First Baptist Church last Sunday morning. The first organization was in 1816 with Rev. J. Keath as pastor. The church was in connection with Clear Creek (a strong church at that time). It grew rapidly until 1829 when the followers of Alexander Campbell took charge and all but two members joined the Disciples movement, taking the church property with them. In 1842, Rev. John Taylor, Rev. J.M. Frost and Rev. Josiah Leak organized a new church with 20 members and Mr. Leak as pastor. The church has had 19 pastors besides the present incumbent. In the four years of his pastorate, there have been 126 additions to the membership (two protracted meetings) and now the number is 554. In 1916, the total contributions were less than $3,000. In 1920, the same were $9,800. George T. Fishback, incumbent, and John W. McCabe are in the race for tax commissioner alongwith the previously announced James Ed Bond. YMCA Club officers for Midway High are Estill Reeves, president; Ashlin Logan, vice-presdent; Colvin Rouse, secretary; and James Cogar, treasurer. For Versailles High, Stuart Gay Berryman, president; Herbert Newman Jr., vice-president; Arthur Pirtle, secretary; and William Boston, treasurer. For Troy High, William McGuire, president; Louis Sheets, vice-president; Sanford Kincaid, secretary; and Roland Curd, treasurer. Master James Cogar was given a surprise party Wednesday night of last week for his 15th birthday. Those present were Charles M. Harriss Jr., John Winn Jr., Madison Cawein, Jack Withrow, James Parrish and William Lehman. There are sore arms in Midway and vicinity due to the vaccination of school children and many grown-ups, as the result of about eight reported cases of smallpox. While the cases reported are of a mild form, every precaution is being taken to prevent its spread. County Clerk Gray has issued 811 automobile, 99 truck and four motorcycle licenses. He has issued 606 dog licenses. The remains of Miss Darnaby Henton left France Saturday on the steamer France and will reach New York on the 13th, and will be brought home immediately for interment. William Dozier, miller at the Farmers Union Mills, accidentally drove a splinter into the index finger of his right hand. He cut the splinter out with his knife. The place became infected, blood poison set up, and Dr. S.A. Blackburn had great difficulty in saving the member. Miss Lizzie Crutcher, who teaches a county school at Duckers, was arraigned in county court Saturday and charged with punishing a pupil inhumanely. She waived examination and was held in $100 to the grand jury.
